2008 Hurricane Update

We extend our sincere thanks to all of our friends who expressed concern about us during Hurricanes Hanna and Ike. While some areas of the Turks and Caicos were severely affected, we are very relieved to report that Pine Cay came through both storms with minimal damage. A clean-up project is underway and we will be opening, as planned, on November 1st, 2008.

Offering a helping hand to the less fortunate

While Pine Cay got off lightly, relatively speaking, with the recent hurricanes, other islands in the Turks and Caicos weren’t as fortunate. South Caicos, Grand Turk and Salt Cay all suffered devastating losses and require substantial assistance. South Caicos and Grand Turk were declared “disaster areas” and have been receiving regular support from the Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI) government, the British Navy and the British Red Cross. However, Salt Cay, perhaps because it is not as heavily populated, did not receive this designation or this level of assistance and the people who live there have been in desperate need.

The Meridian Club and the Pine Cay Homeowners Association responded to this crisis by purchasing and donating a large shipment of necessary building supplies and generators from Miami to Salt Cay within a week after Hurricane Ike struck.

Pine Cay Project, an independent charitable organization, is also ready to help educators and others in the TCI as they educate and assist children and adults whose lives have been disrupted by recent hurricanes. To do this, the Project invites senior officers of schools, libraries, the TCI community college, and local cultural institutions to request Pine Cay Project support for the purchase of books and other educational materials that will aid their organizations' hurricane recovery efforts. These Pine Cay Project grants are intended to replace books and learning materials damaged in the storms, to increase the educational materials available to schools that will receive displaced students from the islands hardest hit by the storms, and to brighten the lives of children and others who have suffered serious personal losses in their homes and elsewhere.

Trustees of Pine Cay Project include several members of the Pine Cay Homeowners Association. The Project is a qualified nonprofit organization under the tax laws of the United States (federal ID #341703337). Donations are tax deductible in the U.S. and will be promptly acknowledged in writing. They may be mailed to:
