Sunshine after the rain; how you can help after the hurricanes…
It’s no secret that the Caribbean has taken it’s fair share of hurricanes this season, with Turks & Caicos being no stranger to the challenging weather. Both Irma and Maria passed directly over the islands and damage has been significant throughout. Despite this, it’s important to speak very loudly of the work that is being done to get us all back on our feet here, and quickly. The clean up efforts have been progressing well and many things are already on their way back to normal, including Providenciales International Airport, which is open and operating. Moreover, we are pleased to announce that The Meridian Club, and our beautiful Pine Cay home, only experienced minimal damage and we are still on schedule to reopen after our yearly summer renovations, as planned, on November 1st.
We have had many people ask us how they can assist our TCI neighbors and friends recover, particularly those who have experienced damage to, and in some cases, complete loss of, their homes – including some of our own Meridian Club staff. Below are some good options for getting much-needed relief to the people who need it most. Any support you can give, no matter how large or small, is hugely appreciated.
Make A Donation: Our Island General Manager, Steven Riely, has established a special fund to help employees whose homes were damaged by the hurricanes. The fund will provide financial aid to The Meridian Club staff with storm-damaged homes, so that they can repair and rebuild their homes. One longtime staff member lost her roof, and her home is likely a total loss. Others have had lesser but significant damage to their homes, including damaged roofs and water inside the home. To help our wonderful staff recover from this storm, we are asking friends and colleagues to make donations toward the delivery of sufficient financial assistance to meaningfully help our cherished Pine Cay family. Steven will work with senior staff who know the TCI well in order to distribute these funds, so that they help staff members, their families, and communities recover from the storms. You can donate to this effort easily through the following page at YouCaring The Meridian Club.
Pine Cay Project: As it has done after other major storms, Pine Cay Project will make grants to TCI schools with storm damage and related educational needs that exceed the relief aid available through the TCI government. Pine Cay Project is a U.S. 501(c)(3) charity. Please forward donations to: Pine Cay Project, 322 Central Park West #6B, New York, NY 10025.
Charitable Organizations in the TCI: At least two TCI charities are delivering direct aid to individuals and communities that suffered serious hurricane damage. HIRTAC is collecting and delivering hurricane relief aid to residents and organizations in the TCI. The Turks and Caicos Islands Red Cross, an overseas branch of the British Red Cross, is also delivering direct aid. A third local organization, the Turks and Caicos Reef Fund, is collecting donations for hurricane relief and channeling these donations to the Turks and Caicos Islands Red Cross. The Turks and Caicos Reef Fund is a U.S. 501(c)(3) charity.
